Guide to the Sanctuary

The tour begins in the Pilgrims’ Square (Plaça dels Pelegrins) where you will find the Town Hall on your left, the porxets on your right and the main building of the sanctuary straight ahead.

Escorca is “one of the most emblematic regions in the mountains of Mallorca”, and one of the largest by area, but with the smallest population. For centuries the Virgin was the “Queen of the mountains of Lluc” until the confiscation of Church goods in 1867. Behind you is the Ca s’Amitger estate which was returned to the sanctuary in 1903. Currently the autonomous government of the Balearic Islands is constructing a Centre for the Interpretation of the Tramuntana mountain range, where you will find an information centre for everything from the campsites to the children’s play areas and excursions.

The sanctuary is part of the Diocese of Mallorca. With the aid of his team and lay brothers, the Prior oversees the administration, pastoral work and the choir school.

The porxets (on the right) were originally designed as lodging for pilgrims who arrived on horseback and are now used as family rooms. They have been declared a historical-artistic monument and overlook the peaceful main square where you can find the drinking trough that dates from 1589 and busts of three well-known Mallorcan literary figures: the poets M Costa i Llobera and Ll Riber and the great apostle of the language, Antoni Maria Alcover.

Passing through the main entrance you will find the Reception and Information desk where you can book accommodation or obtain information for you visit to the Sancutary.
